Imagining, Identifying, and Investigating e-Research

Imagining, Identifying, and Investigating e-Research: An Extended Exploration (half day workshop)

A conventional scholarly concern involves delineating the object of study, and this concern is at high tide among theoretically and empirically oriented scholars involved in the study of e-research. What is 'e-research' and what is its relation to kindred notions such as 'e-science' and 'cyberscience'? What are the most fruitful theoretical perspectives for understanding the seeming 'revolution' underway across the spectrum of scholarship? What empirical orientations and research questions merit attention? What challenges do scholars and institutions face that are engaged in facilitating adoption of e-research tools and resources?

These questions reflect a range of concerns that this workshop plans to address during a session at the 5th International Conference on e-Social Science, to be held 24-26 June 2009 in Cologne, Germany.

The workshop is organized by the Virtual Knowledge Studio for the Humanities and Social Sciences (VKS) and includes scholars from that organization as well as authors from the book project e-Research: Transformations in Scholarly Practice (Routledge, forthcoming 2009). presenters, all involved in understanding and contributing to e-research across a variety of projects and venues, will promote discussion on the above panorama of questions in an effort to contribute to delineating conceptual and methodological directions for future e-research investigations.
