  Description: In another example of how eSocial Science is producing tools which can be taken and adapted across discipline, the Kramer Collection is using GeoVUE\'s ImageCutter to highlight its online art collection. The Kramer Collection is owned by the FAA and aims to promote art from the Netherlands. ImageCutter was originally designed to assist Geographers, but is also used my medical imagers.   Description: The call for papers for our 5th International Conference on e-Social Science, to be held at Maternushaus in Cologne on 24th - 26th June 2009 is now open.
  The aim of the annual international conference on e-Social Science is to bring together leading representatives of the social science, e-Infrastructure, cyberinfrastructure and e-Research communities in order to improve mutual awareness and promote coordinated activities to accelerate research, development and deployment of powerful, new methods and tools for the social sciences and beyond.
  We invite contributions from members of the social science, e-Infrastructure, cyberinfrastructure and e-Research communities with experience of, or interests in: - exploring, developing, and applying new methods, practices, and tools afforded by new infrastructure technologies - such as the Grid and Web 2.0 - in order to further social science research; and - studying issues impacting on the wider take-up of e-Research.
  Contributions from professionals working in and with data services to support research and teaching in the social sciences are especially welcome.
  Submission categories include: full and short papers, posters, demos, workshops, tutorials and panels.

• NCeSS Quantitative Node call open - deadline 29 September 2008 | Source: Internal

  Description: The call for the NCeSS Quantitative Node is now open.
  Call for Proposals
  In October 2007, when the ESRC commissioned the second phase of Nodes, the Commissioning Panel did not approve any proposals that focused on developing quantitative e-Social Science. This has resulted in a gap in the NCeSS research programme which this call is designed to fill, in recognition of the importance of having a Node investigating e-Social Science applications in quantitative social science.
  It is emphasised that this call is for proposals that apply e-Science technologies to a sunstantive research area. Free-standing e-Science proposals that do not engage with the social sciences and social science proposals to which e-Science is not critical will be excluded.
  The overall budget for the Node is £1,060k at 100% fEC, spread over three years, of which the ESRC will meet 80% (£850k).
  How to Apply
  There will be a single stage application process. Full proposals must be submitted by 4pm on Tuesday 30th September 2008 through the Research Councils' Joint electronic Submissions (Je-S) system. The ESRC's Quantitative Node Commissioning Panel will consider the proposals in November 2008 and recommendations for funding will go to the Research Resources Board for approval in December 2008. Decisions will be announced shortly after.

  Description: Are you using data from ESDS International as part of your research or study? If so,they would like to hear from you as they are collecting case studies of data use. ESDS International will use case studies as publicity materials on our website and in paper documentation to raise awareness of the data available through the service and its use in research and teaching and learning. ESDS International will pay a one-off payment of an Amazon voucher worth £50 for each case study published (we reserve the right not to publish).
