User Requirements and Collaboration tools

We are currently undertaking research into the user requirements for a portal solution for quantitative e-Social Scientist (in cooperation with Reading University). This Virtual Research Environment (VRE) will be based upon an adaptation of the Sakai portal framework. The Sakai portal will provide the infrastructure to deploy a range of dedicated research tools in addition to the standard tools already available in the Sakai environment. We are planning to deploy a range of tools developed in cooperation with the JISC funded Sakai VRE portal framework project as funded by JISC. These tools will include a Blog and an integrated e-collaboration suite. The integrated e-collaboration suite provides Video conferencing, VOIP, a whiteboard, a shared desktop and moviecaster facilities.

A further tool currently under development will provide access to Grid resources and search tools which will for instance give access to library catalogues from within the VRE environment. These tools are aimed at providing researchers with the opportunity to effectively and efficiently work together through a single portal interface, whilst being geographically dispersed. Daresbury Laboratories have received funding to make Sakai available to all the NCeSS nodes.
